Mastering the Control-] (Select Right Video Edge) Shortcut in Final Cut Pro

Keyboard shortcut: ControlRight Bracket

Split edits, where picture and sound change at different moments, make dialogue scenes feel smooth and natural. In Final Cut Pro, Control-] (Control-Right Bracket) helps you build them from the keyboard. It’s Select Right Video Edge: it selects the right edge of the video edit point when Audio/Video is expanded.

Understanding Edges

Every edit point has two sides. The left edge is the end of the clip before the edit. The right edge is the start of the clip after the edit. When you expand a clip’s audio and video, each of those edges has a video part and an audio part that can be trimmed separately.

Control-] selects only the video part of the right edge: the start of the video in the clip after the edit. The audio stays where it is.

How to Use It

  1. Expand the audio and video of the clips around your edit (select them and press Control-S, or double-click a clip’s audio).
  2. Move the skimmer or playhead near the edit you want to work on.
  3. Press Control-]. The right video edge is highlighted.
  4. Press the comma or period key to trim that edge one frame at a time, or type a timecode value to trim by an exact amount.
  5. Play back to check how the picture change now lands against the sound.

Why It’s Useful

  • Clean split edits: Let the new speaker’s voice start before you cut to their picture, or let the picture change first.
  • Precise, mouse-free trims: No hunting for a tiny edge with the pointer.
  • Audio stays put: Only the video edge moves, so your dialogue timing is protected.

Tips

  • This command needs Audio/Video expanded. If the clips are collapsed, expand them first.
  • Final Cut Pro also has matching commands for the left video edge and for the audio edges, so you can build any kind of split edit from the keyboard.

Once you get comfortable selecting video edges directly, J-cuts and L-cuts become a quick, repeatable part of your edit.
