How to Use the Option-Shift-R Keyboard Shortcut for Voiceover Recording in Final Cut Pro

Keyboard shortcut: OptionShiftR

Recording narration straight into your project is one of Final Cut Pro's most useful features, and Option-Shift-R makes it quicker. This shortcut runs Start/Stop Voiceover Recording: press it once to start recording a voiceover, and press it again to stop.

Note that this is about recording your own narration. It has nothing to do with VoiceOver, the macOS screen reader.

Set Up First

Before you record, open the Record Voiceover window (Window > Record Voiceover). Choose your microphone as the input device, set the gain so your loudest words don't clip, and decide whether you want a countdown before recording starts. You can also name the take and pick the event where recordings are saved.

How to Record

  1. Place the playhead in the timeline where the narration should begin.
  2. Press Option-Shift-R to start recording.
  3. Speak your lines while the project plays.
  4. Press Option-Shift-R again to stop.

The new recording is added to your timeline at the playhead as a connected audio clip, ready to trim and adjust like any other clip.

Tips for Better Voiceovers

  • Wear headphones so the speakers don't feed back into the microphone.
  • Do a test take and check the levels before recording the real thing.
  • Record in short sections. It's easier to redo one paragraph than an entire script.
  • Use the countdown to give yourself a moment to breathe before you start talking.

With Option-Shift-R, you can record, review and re-record narration without ever reaching for the mouse.
