How to Use the Control-Option-Command-O Keyboard Shortcut for Light and Color Enhancement in Final Cut Pro
Keyboard shortcut: ControlOptionCommandO
Sometimes footage just looks a little flat: a bit dark, a bit dull, colors not quite right. In Final Cut Pro, Control-Option-Command-O runs Add Light and Color Enhancement: it adds light and color enhancements to the selection. Think of it as a quick, automatic starting point for improving a shot.
What This Shortcut Does
Select a clip and press the shortcut, and Final Cut Pro analyzes the image and applies an enhancement to its light and color. It is not the same as adding the Color Wheels or Color Board yourself. You don't have to set anything up first, and the result is added to the clip as an adjustment you can review in the Inspector.
How to Use It
- In the timeline, select the clip (or clips) that need help.
- Press Control-Option-Command-O.
- Play the clip and judge the result in the Viewer.
- Open the Inspector to see the enhancement on the clip. Turn it off and on to compare before and after, adjust it, or remove it if you prefer the original.
When to Use It
- Quick fixes: Social clips, rough cuts and screen recordings that just need a lift.
- A starting point: Apply the enhancement first, then refine with your usual color tools if the shot needs more.
- Many clips at once: Select several clips before pressing the shortcut to enhance them all in one go.
Tips
- Check your video scopes after enhancing. If the waveform shows highlights touching the top, pull them back a little.
- Automatic corrections work best on shots that are close to right already. For a stylized look, grade manually.
It won't replace a careful grade, but for a fast improvement, one shortcut is hard to beat.
