How to Hide Selected Browser Clips in Final Cut Pro with Option-H

Keyboard shortcut: OptionH

A busy Browser makes it harder to find the shots you actually want. Final Cut Pro's Option-H shortcut helps by hiding the clips you select, so the rest are easier to see.

What Option-H Does

Option-H runs the Hide Browser Clips command, which hides the selected clips in the Browser. It works only on clips you've selected. It doesn't hide the whole Browser or every clip in an event.

Hiding a clip isn't the same as deleting it. The clip and its media stay in your library. You're just taking it out of view in the Browser.

How to Use It

  1. Click in the Browser (or press Command-1) so it's active.
  2. Select the clips you don't want to see. Command-click to pick several, or Shift-click to select a run.
  3. Press Option-H. The selected clips are hidden from the Browser.

If you hide something by mistake, press Command-Z right away to undo it.

When It Helps

  • Clearing out clips you're done with: Once you've used a clip or ruled it out, hide it so the clips you haven't reviewed stand out.
  • Focusing an event: Hide the slates, test shots and false starts so only usable footage is left in front of you.

Tips

  • Ratings are another way to clean up the Browser. Press Delete to reject a clip, then filter the Browser to hide rejected clips. Use whichever approach fits how you log footage.
  • Because hidden clips are still in your library, hiding them doesn't free up any storage space.

Option-H is a fast way to declutter the Browser one selection at a time, without losing any media.
