Mastering the Shift-Command-O Keyboard Shortcut in Final Cut Pro
Keyboard shortcut: ShiftCommandO
In the Final Cut Pro Browser, a single clip can hold more than one range selection at a time. Shift-Command-O sets the end of one of those additional ranges.
What Shift-Command-O Does
Shift-Command-O is Set Additional Range End. It sets the end point of an additional range selection at the playhead or skimmer location. It works together with Shift-Command-I, Set Additional Range Start. Pressing plain I and O replaces your current range, while the Shift-Command versions add a new range alongside the ones you already have.
How to Use It
- In the Browser, select a clip and mark your first range with I and O.
- Skim to the start of another section you want and press Shift-Command-I.
- Skim to where that section should end and press Shift-Command-O.
- You now have two separate ranges selected on the same clip. Repeat to add more.
Why It's Useful
- Logging long clips: In a long interview or event recording, select every good moment, then rate or keyword them together. Press F to mark them as favorites, or press Command-K to add a keyword.
- Pulling selects: Mark the pieces you want from one long clip without re-marking for each one.
Tips
- Additional ranges are a Browser feature. In the Timeline, you work with one range at a time.
- If you press plain O by mistake, you'll change your current range instead of adding a new one. Press Command-Z to undo and try again with Shift-Command-O.
Once you're used to it, Shift-Command-O makes it much quicker to log the best parts of long clips.
